Last Blog Spring 25

This is the final (required) blog post of this semester for learning Japanese. Honestly, it is been a lot of fun. Learning a language is always very difficult but I seem to have struggled through it pretty well.

I can genuinely say that I can painstakingly read and write hiragana and katakana now, and I get incredibly happy whenever I can read any random characters I see in my life.

I am going to Japan this summer and am grateful that I have at least the basic information for when I'm abroad. There is A LOT more for me to learn, but at least so far it has been fun and feels very rewarding to know another language.

Thank you ふせせんせい!

My Hero Vigilantes

 Hellooooooo.

Next Japanese video that I watched was the opening for a new show called "My Hero Academia: Vigilantes." I have read the series for this and am INCREDIBLY excited to watch the show. The music itself is incredibly funky and I am slowly recognizing that I can piece together syllables from the audio. Woohoo, education is working!

Offline Love

This one is a bit out of order but here is my third Japanese clip!

I have been watching a show called Offline Love, which is a Japanese dating show. It is incredibly heartwarming and depicts the respectful culture of Japan so well. It is a bit easier to understand the intonation and timing at which the contestants speak, but I am nowhere near able to keep up with them so far. I highly recommend the show to everyone, it is VERY different than American dating shows.

Horimiya Clip

Hello. This clip is from one of my favorite shows "Horimiya" which is an anime that follows the lives of highschoolers Kyouko Hori and Izumi Miyamura. I first came upon this show in the middle of high school and I remember it making me laugh and feel good just in a general sense, and every time I rewatch it is has the same effect.

The video itself is just a series of clips from funny moments of the show, and I caught myself catching onto the pronunciation of the words spoken way more than previously before. I tried watching it with subtitles, but my reading comprehension is not quite at that level yet. The reactions from people are very over the top and goofy. It is such a fun show and I recommend people watch it too!

Chosen Media

I like watching anime movies, and my favorite one is probably Your Name. It is such a beautiful movie with a story that genuinely makes me cry after every watch. The video is a music video using the main song from the movie and the best scenes; it makes me reminisce about the movie every time I watch it and I get chills.

Before this class, I have tried to learn the lyrics and sound out each word before and it was incredibly difficult. Hopefully with this class, I will be able to finally sing along (or at least hear the correct sounds) to one of my favorite movie songs.

WARNING: the video does contain spoilers for the movie, so I highly recommend watching the movie before you watch the video!

FIRST BLOG ENTRY!!!

Hello. My name is Bryce Frailey and I am a junior mechanical engineering student studying Japanese. During school, I like to make 3D models using CAD and I want to work in the energy field after school. Outside of school, my favorite activities are playing video games and volleyball, painting glass art, and reading.

I chose to study Japanese because I may be going abroad this summer to Japan for a study abroad program, and although it is not required, I thought I would give myself some help by learning the basics of the language before I get there.

I look forward to a fun and challenging class!
